‘Torrington Place’…
Thank you, Julie, for permission to post.
A few years ago, when ‘Sewn and Quilted’ came as Guest Speakers to EQI, I (Robyn R), became fascinated with their ‘show and tell’ of Michelle Yeo’s 2017 Quiltmania Mystery Quilt, ‘Torrington Place’. I loved the bright colours, which were so different from what other members of EQI were quilting with at that time. It was a sign up for the bi-monthly release of the pattern through ‘Quiltmania Magazine #117‘ and posting of the fabric from ‘Sewn and Quilted’. I hadn’t made anything like it, and there were different techniques in the pattern - of course, I thought ‘Why not give it a go?’
Funny about that! It took a while for the first package to arrive, and by that time - of course - life interrupted and other projects had come along. So, it was put aside and added to until all parts had been delivered, and so it sat - in a box forgotten about. It was uncovered just before our COVID lockdown, at which time I decided ‘No, I’m not doing that - have too many UFO’s as it is’ (still do!). When my Dear-Sister-in-Law, Julie A, visited, I asked if she would like to do it. This remarkable lady, who has always told me ‘Never say Never’, took on the challenge!
Julie calls it ‘her ‘2020 COVID Buster‘. It’s wonderful, and it well deserves to be hung in any exhibition. There were teasing snapshots along the way of the hand-stitching, then adapted to QAYG blocks, plus learning how to attach QAYG borders,
Just as we celebrate our COVID free days, the quilt is finished, and it’s stunning!
And guess who helped out by showing how big it is! These ever-so-patient unsung heroes of our quilting world, who lovingly pre-program quilt shops into the satnav in preparation for the Cape York - Darwin - Perth road trips (and everywhere else in between), and who is always on hand to give advice as well as seeing a funny side of our craft!
Well done Julie - you are a star!
Robyn R.
