Vern’s Tie Quilt
In 2015, Lorraine Carr was approached to create a quilt using ties belonging to Vern Hauser (1928 - 2015).
“Vernon Thomas Hauser, Australian politician, was a member of the Victorian Legislative Council for Boronia Province from 1970 - 1976 and for Nunawading Province from 1976 - 1982, representing the Liberal Party of Australia.
He started work at 17 with Leonard G. May and Son, and retired 2013 as President of Bell Potter. He was an avid tie collector leaving behind a collection of 250 ties of which 44 were used in the making of this quilt.
The quilt was made to raise money for one of his favourite charities Alzheimers Victoria.”
The quilt is based on the design ‘Mrs Bannister’s Stars, by Jen Kingwell. It is hand pieced and hand quilted by Lorriane Carr.

Well this is fascinating.
I presently live in Vern’s old apartment in East Melbourne where he resided for his last few years.
When we first viewed Vern’s apartment, we were aware of his interest in ties as there was still a large carrousel holding some of them in the main bedroom.
Vern was also a passionate reader and a collector of private correspondence between prominent historical figures.
He was an interested and interesting man, Trish Reardon.
